"LWW" is now 20th highest grossing film ever

According to this article at NarniaWeb, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe brought its worldwide box office total up to $739.6 Millon last week and passed "The Matrix: Reloaded" to become the 20th highest grossing film of all time. Internationally, according to Reuters, the film has now earned an estimated $448 Million after a $1.5 Million weekend. Domestically, the film has earned $291.6 Million, moving ahead of "The Empire Strikes Back."

Narnia nominated for the Oscars!

The film has already been nominated for awards in similar categories from the Visual Effects Society, the Motion Picture Sound Editors group, and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. The Academy Award winners will be announced at the ceremony on March the 5th.

Aslan's Role Model and more...

Narnia Nominated for 8 Saturn Awards

The Chronicles of Narnia has received eight nominations for this year’s Saturn Awards nominations. "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" received 10 nominations and "Batman Begins" received 9. "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" also received 8 nominations.

In the television categories, "Lost" and "Smallville" received a total of 6 nominations each. "Battlestar Galactica" garnered 4 nominations while "Stargate SG-1" and "The Triangle" received 3 nominations each.

The Academy was founded in 1972 to honor and recognize genre filmmaking. Over the years, the Academy has expanded their reach to include other film genres. The organization also honors television, home entertainment and video games. The show will take place on May 2 in Universal City. The full list of nominees can be found here.

According to this article, Milton Soskin appealed to several theaters to allow him to attend "LWW" dressed as a wardrobe.

"Even though I will be sitting in your cinema dressed like a bedroom ornament, I promise not to draw any unwitting attention to myself," he wrote. "I will not talk during the film ... my mobile phone will most definitely be turned off ... In short I will be the perfect cinema patron. It's just that I will be wearing a wardrobe....I chose the wardrobe because ... when you first see it there is a real sense of wonder about what is on the other side."

Apparently, one theater responded:

"I never heard back from Hoyts. The Dendy told me they weren't screening it but if I wanted to come out of the closet I could come and watch 'Brokeback Mountain,'" Soskin told The Daily Telegraph on Sunday. The Greater Union Megaplex in North Ryde told The Daily Telegraph Soskin could watch a Sunday screening sporting his outfit made of IKEA door handles plywood and gaffer tape free of charge.

"LWW" DVD Release Update

According to this source, the tentative release date of the "LWW" DVD will be Tuesday, April 11, 2006, right before Easter. There will also be three different editions of the DVD: A deluxe edition, a 2.35:1 widescreen edition, and a 1.33:1 fullscreen edition. An extended version of "LWW" may also be in the works.

Update: The official firm date from Disney Home Video of the DVD release will be April 4, 2006.

Prince Caspian A Go!

Since "LWW" has done so well at the box office after only a couple of weeks--$187 million worldwide at this time--the rumors are that Prince Caspian has been given the greenlight, to be released in December of 2007!

Source Claims Prince Caspian Greenlit
According to a source at Disney who requested anonymity Prince Caspian, the second story in the Chronicles of Narnia, has been greenlit for a December 2007 theatrical release. Disney was hoping for a $60 million opening weekend for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and since the film’s opening exceeded their expectation they are moving forward.

Don’t expect an official announcement until later in the week or possibly as late as January. Adamson hasn’t decided whether he will direct the new film, but most think he will be back. The script is very nearly finished, and the general feeling is that with a lot of the tech in place for the picture (e.g. Aslan) they could start the shoot on New Zealand’s South Island as early as this summer.

A big thanks to ’Pogostick’ for coming forward with this information. Remember to take this news with a grain of salt since it hasn’t been officially confirmed from the studio. We thought you’d like to hear the rumblings from the ground, though.

LOS ANGELES - Christmas is arriving early this year for Buena Vista as “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe” worked its magic on audiences in its debut and warmed up to a dazzling estimate of $67.1 million. Internationally, “Narnia” opened this weekend in 14 markets and generated an estimated $41.7 million, bringing the worldwide cume to a radiant $108.8 million.

The well-reviewed fantasy-adventure film, helmed by Andrew Adamson and based on the first book from the beloved series by author C.S. Lewis, generated the biggest debut ever for the comparable weekend and the second-highest December opening of all time. Only New Line Cinema’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” the final film in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and based on the series written by Lewis’ friend, J.R.R. Tolkien, opened higher ($72.6 million). The other two films in the “Lord of the Rings” series, “The Two Towers” and “The Fellowship of the Ring,” are the third-and fourth-biggest debuts in December, with $62 million and $47.2 million, respectively.

Walden Media and Walt Disney Pictures co-produced the PG-rated “Narnia,” which cost about $150 million.

Here is a good review of the movie, discussing its strengths as well as its potential shortcomings.

At last, the Pevensies have reached the silver screen. What a joy to see Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy—the four siblings of C. S. Lewis's beloved The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe—brought to life so vividly. After all of the rumors, the fretting about literary fidelity, and the angst about religious agendas, we can praise director Andrew Adamson and his fine young actors for developing these "Sons of Adam" and "Daughters of Eve" into three-dimensional, engaging characters.

Ebert and Roeper gave it 2 thumbs up!

It is not just a 'must see' but a 'must see again and again'. Where is that sixth star when you need it? Not only does it miraculously do full justice to CS Lewis's classic fantasy, it improves upon it and gives a more sophisticated sense of humour. ...

Here is the new Narnia poster for the upcoming movie, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. (LWW) Rumor has it that Liam Neeson has taken Brian Cox's place as the voice of Aslan, but that has not been confirmed, nor has it been listed as part of Liam's filmography at this point.

Update (7/18/05): It's official...Liam Neeson is indeed the voice of Aslan for LWW.

As Star Wars "Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" opened this weekend, it featured the trailer for the upcoming film "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," (LWW) from C.S. Lewis' 7-book series "The Chronicles of Narnia," coming out December 9th. Walden Media is producing, who also put out such family-friendly movies as "Holes," "Because of Winn-Dixie," "I Am David," and the upcoming "Charlotte's Web" with Julia Roberts as the voice of Charlotte. The trailer alone is awesome, and I can't wait to see the completed product this Christmastime. The Chronicles will be the 7-year replacements for "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy, IMHO.

Update: It has been announced that there will be 4 different soundtracks released for this movie--a film score soundtrack, a Christian artists album, a rock and pop album, and a children's album--in order to appeal to a larger audience. Find soundtrack information here.
